Phonics
A program of synthetic phonics teaching is used at Brook Field. We use the Monster Phonics Scheme, to develop and enhance the children’s phonetic awareness across Key Stage One.
There are 6 stages or phases to children’s phonic development:

PHASE ONE |
There is a strong emphasis on listening skills and oral blending and segmenting in this Phase which underpins the learning in the all other phases. |

PHASE TWO |
19 letters of the alphabet introduced. There is one sound for each letter/grapheme. |

PHASE THREE |
The remaining 7 letters of the alphabet are taught and we start to introduce digraphs for other phonemes. E.g. th |

PHASE FOUR |
This phase consists of teaching blending and segmenting adjacent consonants. |

PHASE FIVE |
More graphemes are taught to represent sounds. Sounds are represented by more than one grapheme. |

PHASE SIX |
This phase includes revision of phases two to five. (GPC’s - grapheme-phoneme correspondence) There is a focus on spelling with simple prefixes and suffixes, adding endings and doubling/dropping of final letters. Finally, homophones are introduced. E.g. road & rode |
