Terms 3 and 4 : Romans and Celts

Welcome back and a very Happy New Year to you all!
We hope everyone had a lovely holiday and is ready and raring to go to start a new and exciting term as we begin 2019?!
How the date for this letter is written may give you a clue that, in Term 3, we will be time travelling back in time again to look at our new, history-based topic: ‘Revolting but Remarkable Romans V Colourful and Crafty Celts’! This topic will be full of interesting, historical information and exciting cross curricular links. There will be a focus on the Roman conquest of Britain, identifying the reasons behind the invasions and researching Roman life, settlements, customs and army. We will also be looking at the opposing side, the Celts, and the Celtic warriors’ beliefs, the different tribes, settlements, fashion and jewellery. We will investigate Boudicca and how the Romans viewed her revolt through discussion and dance before comparing Roman and Celtic Britain.
We are in the process of organising a visit to a local Roman settlement and seeing if a Roman Centurion can join us for an epulum (public feast) to instruct us in Roman Culture! More details of these exciting opportunities will be given to you shortly.
In English, we will be looking at instructional writing linked to historical pizza making which we will be doing in DT. We will also be looking at recounts and diary writing from the perspective of a Roman soldier or Celtic solider, really getting to grips with the thoughts and feelings they might have felt at this time in history. We also hope to look at Roman Myths and Legends.
During Maths sessions, there will be a focus on Multiplication and Division looking at the long and short written methods of calculating using the multiplication tables that they know and progressing from mental strategies. We will be applying these skills to a variety of problem solving and reasoning activities. We will also be looking at Statistics; in particular interpreting and building bar charts and pictograms.
The children are sure to be very enthusiastic about Art as we will be looking at and creating our own Roman mosaics both practically and on computer and designing and making a Roman shield and a clay relief of a Roman or Celt artefact! Throughout our Computing sessions we will be learning about collecting information from a variety of safe internet sources and learning how to manipulate fonts and formats. We will be making cross curricular links with Computing and P.E. (dance) to be able to capture still images of a battle scene or Gladiator fight and explore stop motion animation!
Another highlight will be Miss Dixon’s Class Assembly on Friday 1st February and she will be sending out all the information about this in the first couple of weeks of the term.

Swimming will start on Monday 14th January. Please ensure that your child’s swimming kit is in school each Monday. Our P.E. sessions are on Friday afternoon for our indoor sessions on dance; it is essential that PE kits and school uniform, including appropriate footwear, is named and remains in school all week long. Our day for using the all-weather track during the “Wake and Shake” time is Thursday and your child will need to wear trainers/daps to be able to use it as the surface can spoil school shoes (and the classroom carpet!!
Maths and Topic homework is handed out on a Friday and is due back in the following Wednesday. Please make sure your child places their homework in the correct tray. Spellings are usually sent home on a Tuesday to be returned for the following Monday.
