Term 6 : Animals, light and rocks

Year 3’s Term 6 Topic Letter

Welcome back to the final term of the year! It promises to be action-packed! We have more exciting science orientated topics, focusing on, ‘Animals’ ‘Light’ & ‘Rocks’. We will kick start our term with ‘Light’ and we are very lucky to have some visitors come and show us some very exciting light equipment and activities! The children will:

recognise that they need light in order to see things and that dark is the absence of light;

notice that light is reflected from surfaces;

recognise that light from the sun can be dangerous and that there are ways to protect their eyes;

recognise that shadows are formed when the light from a light source is blocked by a solid object and

to find patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.

The rest of the term focuses around humans and animal’s musculoskeletal systems, identifying important bones and their functions and classifying animals depending on whether they are vertebrates or invertebrates. To add to this fascinating science topic, we will be lucky enough to have a “surprise visitor” to observe and learn about in our class room!

We are also very lucky to have a visitor for our Rocks’ science objectives, where the children will learn more about the various types of rocks and learn about how fossils are formed.

In English we will start to look at stories, particularly fables and then steer towards non-fiction writing with non-chronological reports. Dick King Smith will be our author focus as many of his stories are about, or relate to, animals.

Within Maths we will continue to look at statistics, geometry and the four operations. We still encourage your child to practise their times tables and club badge.

In PSHE we will be focusing on “Changes”. A letter will go out soon, regarding an open evening on Tuesday 11th June, to look at the resources and materials shown to the children within these sessions.

In PE, we will continue with swimming on a Monday and in our Friday PE lessons we will be focusing on athletics, preparing us for Area Sports (Thursday 11th July) and Sports Day (Friday 5th July). It is important that children have their PE kit in school everyday as we may get the opportunity for extra practices.

As the weather is set to get hotter, please can your child bring in a named water bottle, hat and sun cream.

More details about this term can be found on our topic web.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support. If you would like to help and offer you expertise in a certain topic area, then it would be greatly received.
