Term 4 : Jack and the Baked Beanstalk

This term our topic is based on the Fairy Tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Fairy Tales are an important part of English, as they are known in different languages across the world. They are perfect for oral storytelling skills and adapting to create your own story. Fairy Tales also provide opportunities for discussions related to moral issues.

Whilst our topic is based on the ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, we will be focussing on an adapted text called ‘Jack and the Baked Beanstalk’ by Colin Stimpson. This version offers the children the opportunity to show how traditional fairy tales can be changed and characters can be adapted, with beautiful illustrations.

In English, the children will be retelling the traditional version of the fairy tale.  We will also be looking at how ‘Jack and the Baked Beanstalk’ has been adapted, with the aim of planning and creating our own version of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

In Science, the children will be exploring plants and growing beans. They will be conducting experiments to find which are the best conditions for plants to grow in. They will be measuring the height of their plants and, once established, we hope to plant them outside, ready to reap the beans later on in the year.

In Computing, the children will be learning about simple coding using a programme called ‘Scratch Junior’. The programme is based on making the character move to complete objectives set by the programme. It also challenges the children to work out how to debug a programme, in simple terms.

In Art, we will be looking at Andy Warhol’s art and create our own baked bean can painting.

For further topic details, please see our topic web.

In P.E. we will be practising Cricket skills. These lessons will take place outside, weather permitting. Therefore, please could you ensure that your child has some warmer P.E. kit in school. E.g. tracksuit bottoms and a warm sweatshirt. Our P.E. days are on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Thank you
