We welcome you all to Year 3 and the start of Key Stage 2. We hope you are ready for an exciting year with a range of fascinating topics.
Our History-based topic for Term 1 explores how Britain changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. From the dawn of our species, we will discover more about the lifestyle of our ancestors from the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) through to the Iron Age via the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) and Neolithic (New Stone Age) times! We will investigate the houses, religion and culture, use of agriculture, materials and tools from this period in time. By using different sources of Historical evidence and artefacts the children will be able to solve the clues left behind by those who lived in these ancient times.
In English, we will be focusing upon the following genres: Poems and Descriptive Writing, linking to our Stone Age topic and developing the children’s choice of vocabulary and in Maths, we will concentrate on number, place value and addition, dealing with larger numbers.
In Computing, we will look at Digital Literacy and E-Safety, including how to send and receive e-mails safely and searching websites connected to our topic. We will be sending information home shortly regarding setting homework on DB primary.
The accompanying Topic Web for Term 1 shows in more detail what we will be covering in other subjects.
Our PE day is a Friday, so please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on this day, with all clothing labelled. You will have received an email about this detailing what the children can wear. For Term 1, we will be doing gymnastics. Year 3’s other PE slot is usually swimming; as we receive further guidance regarding Covid 19 we will keep you updated on whether this will be possible this academic year. However, under normal circumstances, we would not be starting swimming lessons until January 2021.
We would also be grateful if snack pots, lunch boxes and water bottles are all clearly labelled with your child’s name, so we can return these items quickly if they are left in a different place from normal. Please encourage your child to take these home every evening to be cleaned and re-stocked!!
If you are able to offer any help/expertise in our different curriculum areas, please speak to a member of the Year 3 team!
We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Year 3, your continued support and a very busy and exciting first term.
