Term 1 : Savage Stone Age to Inventive Iron Age

We welcome you all to Year 3 and the start of Key Stage 2. We hope you all had a lovely break over the summer and are ready for an exciting year with a range of fascinating topics and challenging opportunities.

Our History-based topic for Term 1 explores how Britain changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. From the dawn of our species, we will discover more about the lifestyle of our ancestors from the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) through to the Iron Age via the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) and Neolithic (New Stone Age) times! We will investigate the houses, religion and culture, use of agriculture, materials and tools from this period in time. By using different sources of Historical evidence and artefacts the children will be able to solve the clues left behind by those who lived in these ancient times. We are lucky enough to go on a school trip to Cheddar Gorge on Thursday 19thSeptember where the children will be immersed in our new topic through a cross curricular, hands on approach. You will be receiving a letter about this exciting trip nearer the time.

In English, we will be using our Stone Age topic to write descriptive narratives and poems.

Within our Maths lessons, we will focus upon number and place value as well as addition and subtraction.

In Computing, we will look at Digital Literacy and E-Safety, including how to send and receive e-mails safely and searching websites connected to our topic. We will create and design content using graphics and text boxes linked to our English and topic work.

The accompanying Topic Web for Term 1 shows in more detail what we will be covering in other subjects.

Please ensure that your child has their named PE kit in school, as we have PE every Friday afternoon. For Term 1, we will be developing our football skills on Fridays. Children will not need to bring football boots or shin pads in at this stage! Swimming at the Link Centre will start in January; a letter regarding swimming will go out nearer the time.

We would also be grateful if snack pots, lunch boxes and water bottles are all clearly labelled with your child’s name, so we can return these items quickly if they are left in a different place from normal. Please encourage your child to take these home every evening to be cleaned and re-stocked!!

Homework will be sent home on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday and will usually consist of Maths and English or Topic work. Spellings will usually be sent home on Tuesday in a red spelling book. We would be grateful if they could be returned the following Monday for the children to be tested and new spellings to be given out.

If you are able to offer any help/expertise in our different curriculum areas, please speak to a member of the Year 3 team! We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Year 3, your continued support and a very busy and exciting first term.
