We welcome you all to Year 4 and the next year of Key Stage 2. We hope you all had a lovely break
over the summer and are ready for an exciting year with a range of fascinating topics and
Our first couple of weeks in year 4 will see us making an exciting start to our brand new topic on the
Saxons with a variety of activities planned including a trip to Path Hill on Thursday 13th September.
We will be leaving at 8:30 prompt and returning to school at 3:20. A separate letter will be sent out
on the first day back and we thank you in advance for your prompt payment of £23:00. This is
certain to be an eventful and engaging day which will inspire the children as they start to learn about
our Autumnal topic. We will be designing and making lots of Saxon artefacts over the following
weeks and tasting foods similar to those eaten in that period. We are also planning an inhouse Saxon
and Vikingday towards the end of the Christmas term where we would like your child to dress up as
a Saxon, so look on the website for past clothing ideas and start being creative if you wish!
English will see us writing some newspaper reports based on the Saxon invasion which will link to
our computing topic. We will also be looking at instructional writing and narrative writing, creating
our own Saxon adventure stories towards the end of the term.
Our Computing work will link to English, where we will be creating a newspaper report to report on
our Saxon day experience and imagining what an invasion would have been like to the defenceless
monks at Lindisfarne. We will also focus on e-safety.
In PSHE we are discussing and exploring how to become the best class team possible. This will link to
this terms value of respect and apply to the weekly star of the week and leaf of achievement awards.
In RE we are going to be learning all about what we can learn from religions about what is right and
wrong, looking specifically at The 10 Commandments, the Jewish and Christian faith.
In French we will be learning the different countries of the world and the variety of transport used
within them. We will also learn the days of the week, how to travel and the weather.
Art will focus on pattern and printing and designing our own patterns using runes as our motifs. We
have a wealth of artefacts to use and inspire us in our work so watch out for our creations and
More details can be found on our topic web and also on the Year 4 DB primary page which can be
accessed through Brookfield's virtual learning environment. The children will be able to access topic
challenges, thought provoking forum topics and a gallery of images showing our previous term in
Year 4. There are also some useful website links which can further the children's learning and also
allow them to have some fun out of the classroom.
We can't wait for these experiences to really inspire us and help us to understand the Saxons a little
more. If you have any talents or expertise you would like to share with us to enhance our topic,
please let us know as we are always keen to accept help in any form.
Year 4 Team.
