We welcome you all to Year 3 and the start of Key Stage 2. We hope you all had a lovely break over the summer and are ready for an exciting year with a range of fascinating topics and challenging opportunities.
Our History-based topic for Term 1 explores how Britain changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. From the dawn of our species, we will discover more about the lifestyle of our ancestors from the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) through to the Iron Age via the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) and Neolithic (New Stone Age) times! We will investigate the houses, religion and culture, use of agriculture, materials and tools from this period in time. By using different sources of Historical evidence and artefacts the children will be able to solve the clues left behind by those who lived in these ancient times.
We are lucky enough to invite to the school ‘One Day Theatre Company’ on Wednesday 14th September to immerse the children in our new topic through a cross curricular, drama, approach! You will then be able to see the children’s performance at the end of the day. We will also be visiting Stonehenge on Tuesday 18th October to engage the children into this pre-History topic. You will be receiving separate letters regarding both of these events soon.
In English, we will be focusing upon the following genres: Newspaper Reports, Narratives and Poems.
In Computing, we will look at Digital Literacy and E-Safety, including how to send and receive e-mails safely and searching websites connected to our topic. We will create and design content using graphics and text boxes linked to our English and topic work.
The accompanying Topic Web for Term 1 shows in more detail what we will be covering in other subjects.
Please ensure that your child has their named PE kit in school, as we have PE on Mondays and Fridays. For Term 1, we will be developing our football skills on Fridays. Children will not need to bring football boots or shin pads in at this stage! A separate letter regarding the arrangements for our Swimming lessons will be sent out to all Year 3 pupils and we would appreciate a prompt response as our sessions will start Monday 19th September. We know how much most of the children are looking forward to this activity!
We would also be grateful if snack pots, lunch boxes and water bottles are all clearly labelled with your child’s name, so we can return these items quickly if they are left in a different place from normal. Please encourage your child to take these home every evening to be cleaned and re-stocked!!
Homework will be sent home on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday and will usually consist of Maths and English or Topic work. Spellings will usually be sent home on Tuesdays in their blue spelling books. We would be grateful if they could be returned the following Monday for the children to be tested and new spellings to be given out.
If you are able to offer any help/expertise in our different curriculum areas, please speak to a member of the Year 3 team!
We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Year 3, your continued support and a very busy and exciting first term.
The Year 3 Team
