Triumph Over Tregose

Triumph Over Tregoze

The A team footballers returned to winning ways in the West Swindon League on Thursday 30th March with a hard-fought 4 – 1 victory over Tregoze.

Following the previous evening’s Lydiard Park Academy West Swindon Tournament, a couple of changes were made  to freshen the team up. Louis came in as goalkeeper, Jamie returned as a forward and Owen had a debut for the A team in midfield – just reward for all his commitment and hard work at Football Club!

So Louis, Rhys, Peter, Owen, Finn (capt), Josh and Jamie were our starting seven with Ollie and Harvey being our "finishers" as Eddie Jones, the England Rugby Union coach, calls his replacements!

Brook Field kicked off and had all the early pressure with Jamie scoring our first goal on the three minute mark. Louis kicked a long kick out of his hands. It bounced once into the penalty area and Jamie showed good bravery to nip in past their defenders and before their tall goalkeeper and flick a header over and past him and into the net. 1 – 0 – we were up and running on the scoring front, which we have found difficult recently.

Three minutes later, we doubled our lead. Owen won a throw on the right. A quick throw was taken to him and he crossed it into the "corridor of indecision" about six yards in front of the goal. Jamie running into the middle of the goal missed his shot but this was enough to fool the goalie and Josh, arriving at the back post, scuffed his shot slightly, but he had an empty net to aim for. 2 - 0.

We continued to dominate the match with Jamie hammering a shot against the cross bar and a couple more shots over the top but Louis had to be on his toes and was quickly out of his goal to thwart a Tregoze attack and then saved a header from a long Tregoze throw-on.

Brook Field eventually managed to exert some control and get some breathing space when Finn went on one of his mazy dribbles beating three defenders, some of them twice. He reached the goal line and pulled the ball back to Josh standing in the middle of the goal. He calmly slotted the ball home with a side-footed shot. 3 - 0.

The first half continued with Louis making a good save but conceding a corner after Rhys misplaced a defensive header. Owen, Jamie and Josh combined well. Josh took two steps before hitting a fierce right-footed shot that was tipped over for a corner. From the corner, Jamie fired a shot that was parried by the goalie back to Rhys on the edge of the area. His first time shot was narrowly wide.

Tregoze then pulled a goal back when a long clearance caught Peter out with the height of the bounce and the Tregoze forward, one-on-one with Louis, was able to slot the ball past him as he came out. 3 – 1.

With 16 minutes of the first half gone, Ollie came on for Jamie and Harvey replaced Owen but no more major action took place until half time.

Tregoze kicked off the second half and immediately showed their intent with a shot over the bar. Harvey and Ollie combined well on several occasions but headers flew over or their first touch took them too wide to make a meaningful shot on target. The majority of the rest of the half was about stout defending, especially from Rhys for long throws into the penalty area or heading clear long, high balls from their goalkeeper.

Louis made a couple of important saves including a dangerous one-on-one situation and Ollie shot straight at their 'keeper when one-on-one with him. On 15 minutes, Jamie returned for Harvey on the left wing, Ollie switched to right-mid and Owen came on for Josh and went up-front. Ollie crossed from the right, Owen flicked the ball on in the middle and Jamie coming in from the left wing, hit his shot past the advancing ‘keeper and into the bottom corner of the net with the outside of his right boot. 4 - 1 and effectively the game was won. Finn then had a long shot. Louis produced another good save before Jamie had the final fierce shot over the bar. With two minutes to go, Harvey came on for Finn.

We have a busy week next week as well with away matches against Noremarsh on Monday and Peatmoor on Friday. Thanks to all the parents for their support and to the Tregoze parents for their encouragement for both teams!
