Welcome back to another exciting science orientated term focusing on ‘Animals’ and ‘Light’. We will kick start our term with an engaging, hands on experience with Walk with Hawks on Thursday 14th June and later in the term have a trip to Lower Shaw Farm (on Wednesday 4th July) where the children will be immersed in Farm life and learn all about the various animals, their habitats, diet and nutrition.
The rest of the animal topic focuses around humans and animals’ musculoskeletal systems, identifying important bones and their functions and classifying animals depending on whether they are vertebrates or invertebrates. We will also be lucky enough to have a “surprise visitor” to observe and learn about in our class room! Within our light topic we will be exploring how we can see different objects when light is reflected off them and how the size and shape of shadows can be altered.
In English we will start to look at stories, particularly fables and then steer towards non-fiction writing with non-chronological reports. Dick King Smith will be our author focus as many of his stories are about, or relate to, animals.
Within Maths we will continue to look at statistics, geometry, measurements and the four operations. We still encourage your child to practise their times tables and club badge. In term 6, the children will be given their very own times table book, where they can practice the times tables each week! We also have a Maths Theme Week during the week of 16th July, when we are hoping to have a visitor who works for a professional football club come in and demonstrate some of the maths they use in their job!
In PE, we will continue with swimming on a Monday and in our Friday PE lessons we will be focusing on athletics, preparing us for Sports Day. (Athletics Club will also be on a Monday if your child has been allocated a place.)
As the weather is set to get hotter, please can your child bring in a named water bottle, hat and sun cream.
More details about this term can be found on our topic web.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. If you would like to help and offer you expertise in a certain topic area, then it would be greatly received.
