Term 5 : The Quest Christopher Columbus

Welcome Back! We hope you had a lovely break.

We have a very busy term ahead of us. We would like to take this opportunity to direct you to the schools website and the Year 2 page, where you will find our presentation of the SATs meeting, as a reminder on how best to support your child during this term. If you have any questions, please see your class teacher who will be happy to help you.

We look forward to a very exciting and new topic. We will be embarking upon a Quest to discover what it was like to be an Explorer in 1492! The topic will begin with an experience day, whereby the children will have a scene set up in the hall, which they will explore and make observations about. They will also have a tasting experience during which they will taste a variety of different foods which Columbus discovered on his voyages. (A letter was sent home on Friday 29th March)

This is a History based topic, whereby the children will be dramatizing life on board a tall ship and finding out about what it was like to sail the oceans and discover new countries. As a class, the children will be discovering the life of Christopher Columbus prior to his discovery of the New World. They will then research what he found and how this has had an impact upon life today.

In English, the children will create Information texts about Tall ships. Based on finding out about Christopher Columbus, the children will also be writing diary extracts, as if they were the explorer himself!

In Geography, the children will be using a compass to navigate World maps, discovering the voyages of Christopher Columbus.

As a culmination of our topic, we will be visiting SS Great Britain in Bristol on Monday 20th May. This is a wonderful trip, whereby the children actually get to explore a ship from a similar era and find out about life on board a sailing vessel.
