We certainly had an action-packed Term 1 and everyone has seemed to settle quite well into Year 3 and Key Stage 2. The children have been excited by our swimming sessions as well as the trip to Avebury and our visitor who brought in lots of Stone Age artefacts to enrich our topic. The term finished on a high note (quite literally) with our Ten Pieces creative work based on “A Bao A Qu“ from “Anthology of Fantastic Zoology” by the American composer Mason Bates.
Our History-based topic for Term 2 continues to explore how our ancient ancestors lived and came to settle around the world. We will continue to explore the Stone Age and then concentrate on Iron Age hill forts, farming, art and culture. We will then compare this to modern day societies and look at the similarities and differences between pre-history and today.
In English, we will be focusing upon the following genres: describing settings for story-telling, persuasive letter writing and fairy tales.
In Maths our focus will be Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and division, Measurement and statistics.
In Computing, we will look at creativity this will involve building our very own Iron Age Hill fort containing the features we find out about during our topic work. We will then also be creating our own settlement using the program local studies.
The accompanying Topic Web shows in more detail what we will be learning in other subjects.
Please ensure that your child has their named PE kit in school for Fridays, when we will be developing our gymnastic skills and core strength! Children will continue to need their swimming costumes on Mondays. Our turn for using the new all-weather track is on Thursday mornings so children will need to have their daps or trainers with them, please, so they can build up their fitness and healthy lifestyles!
We would also be grateful if snack pots, lunch boxes and water bottles are all clearly labelled with your child’s name, so we can return these items quickly if they are left in a different place from normal! Please encourage your child to take these home every evening to be cleaned and re-stocked!!
Homework will continue to be sent home on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday and will usually consist of Maths and English or Topic work. Spellings will usually be sent home on Tuesdays in their thin red spelling books. We would be grateful if they could be returned the following Monday for the children to be tested and new spellings to be given out. As mentioned at the recent Parents’ Evenings, children should also be bringing back a reading book and their reading record every day(!)
If you are able to offer any help/expertise in our different curriculum areas, please speak to a member of the Year 3 team!
We look forward to another busy and exciting term with your continued support and just to let you know, it’s only 56 days ‘til Christmas Day..…!! Yippee!
