Term 1 - Savage Stone Age and Inventive Iron Age

We welcome you all to Year 3 and the start of Key Stage 2. We hope you all had a lovely break over the summer and are ready for an exciting year with a range of fascinating topics and challenging opportunities.

Our History-based topic for Term 1 explores how Britain changed from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. From the dawn of our species, we will discover more about the lifestyle of our ancestors from the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) through to the Iron Age via theMesolithic (Middle Stone Age) and Neolithic (New Stone Age) times! We will investigate the houses, religion and culture and the use of agriculture, materials and tools from this period in time. By using different sources of Historical evidence and artefacts the children will be able to solve the clues left behind by those who lived in these ancient times.

We are looking forward to going on a school trip to Avebury on Wednesday 20th September and have a Druid come to visit on Tuesday 3rd October. These opportunities will immerse the children in our new topic through a cross curricular, hands on approach. You will be receiving a letter about both events nearer the time.

In English, we will be focusing upon the following genres: Poetry and Narratives concentrating on describing settings and characters.

In Computing, we will look at Digital Literacy and E-Safety, including how to send and receive e-mails and search websites connected to our topic safely. We will create and design content using graphics and text boxes linked to our English and topic work.

The accompanying Topic Web for Term 1 shows in more detail what we will be covering in other subjects.

Please ensure that your child has their named PE kit in school, as we have PE every Friday afternoon. For Term 1, we will be developing our football skills on Fridays. Children will not need to bring football boots or shin pads in at this stage! A separate letter regarding the arrangements for our Swimming lessons will be sent out to all Year 3 pupils and we would appreciate a prompt response as our sessions start on Monday 18th September. We know how much most of the children are looking forward to this activity!

We would be grateful if snack pots, lunch boxes and water bottles are all clearly labelled with your child’s name, so we can return these items quickly if they are left in a different place from normal. Please encourage your child to take these home every evening to be cleaned and re-stocked!!

Homework will be sent home on a Friday to be handed in by the following Wednesday and will usually consist of Maths, English (or Topic work) and Spellings. Spellings will be sent home in their red spelling books. We would be grateful if these red books could be returned by the following Wednesday so we can test the children on Fridays and give out the new spelling patterns.

If you are able to offer any help/expertise in our different curriculum areas, please speak to a member of the Year 3 team!

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Year 3, your continued support and a very busy and exciting first term.
