BBC have produced a DVD consisting of 10 pieces of famous music for primary school age children to introduce them to classical musical from a variety of musical eras. Each piece of music has a recognisable famous presenter to talk the children through the music.
Brook Field School dedicated the last week of the first term to a ‘BBC Ten Pieces 3 day spectacular event’ where each child experienced the power of democracy by voting for their favourite piece of music from the following;
John Adams: Short Ride in a Fast Machine
Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 (1st movement)
Britten: 'Storm' Interlude from 'Peter Grimes'
Grieg: In the Hall of the Mountain King from 'Peer Gynt'
Handel: Zadok the Priest
Holst: 'Mars' from 'The Planets'
Anna Meredith: Connect It
Mozart: Horn Concerto No. 4 (3rd movement)
Mussorgsky: A Night on the Bare Mountain
Stravinsky: The Firebird – suite (1911) (Finale)
Time was then given for the children to be fully involved in the planning process of how the class could respond creatively to their chosen music. The rest of the three days was spent creating, producing and evaluating their responses and achievements.
The three day Ten Pieces spectacular ended with the children dancing, performing, presenting and playing some of their greatest achievements from over the three days. Teachers and children alike really enjoyed taking an active role in this evolving musical event which inspired some magnificent creativity.
