Brook Field 4 – 2 Gorse Hill
Brook Field secured their place in the third round of the Swindon PSFA Cup with a 4 – 2 win over Gorse Hill. Expecting another tough cup game, particularly after the morning’s rain, which had put the tie in jeopardy earlier in the day, Brook Field lined up with Max in goal; Sam and Rhys as the defensive pairing; Harvey, Finn and Josh F in midfield and Jamie as striker. Ollie, Samuel and Josh C were the substitutes.
Gorse Hill kicked off at 4:10pm but Brook Field managed to win the ball and set up a good attack with Josh F playing a key role. Gorse Hill counter attacked immediately but after this see-saw start, it was Brook Field who began to dominate. A corner was won on the left hand side. Sam took it and it came to Jamie, whose shot was deflected behind for another corner, this time on the right. Sam took this again. The ball bobbled around inside the penalty area before coming back to Sam on the bounce, who had moved into the right hand edge of the penalty area. From an almost impossible angle, his lobbed shot went narrowly over the bar and onto the top of the net with the goalie keeping a close eye on the flight of the ball.
4:15pm and Brook Field went one-nil up. Gorse Hill were on the attack and were down in the right hand corner of the pitch. Sam won the ball back with an impressive tackle and played a simple pass forward to Finn who took a couple of paces forward towards the half way line. He hit a fabulous defence splitting pass into Josh F, who had raced forward down the right. The pass bounced perfectly into his path. As a defender raced to get back, Josh gave the ‘keeper “the eyes” and hit a right foot shot across the goal and into the left hand corner of the net. The ‘keeper was expecting a shot at the near post had left a big enough gap for Josh to shoot home with his weaker foot. The ball fizzed off the wet turf and rippled the back of the net. 1 – 0.
Max made a fine save to concede a corner but again Brook Field turned this to their advantage to increase their lead. The corner was cleared to Jamie who was one-on-one with a defender but with half the pitch to go. Minutes earlier, he had been squeezed out by two Gorse Hill defenders in a similar situation but this time he turned on the after-burners and raced away from his man-marker, who pulled up with a tight muscle as well during the race to goal. Against the ‘keeper, Jamie took his shot early enough to negate any closing of the angles and Brook Field were 2 – 0 up and looking confident.
Just past the mid-way point of the first half, the Gorse Hill goalie unfortunately slipped when kicking the ball out of his hands and landed awkwardly on the top of his back/neck. After a lengthy stop for treatment, he had to go off and be replaced by an outfield player. The player made a couple of stops and clearances before Jamie took a shot on the turn, which the new ‘keeper got a firm hand to, but due to the spin and pace of the shot, it just had enough legs on it to squeeze between the goalie’s body and the upright and rolled into the back of the net. 3 – 0.
The interruption due to the ‘keeper’s injury did change the flow of the match, as Brook Field who were looking comfortable began to lose concentration. Harvey curled a free-kick just wide after Brook Field had gone 3 – 0 up but then Gorse Hill, clawed their way back into the tie and were unlucky not to pull a goal back but Max produced a great save from point bank range and the follow up shot was cleared desperately off the line by a defender sliding in. Ollie came on for Josh F and Samuel replaced Jamie in the first wave of substitutions. Gorse Hill then did pull a goal back as a player beat Max as he rushed out of the goal and then lobbed his shot in as two defenders made attempts to dash back and stop the shot. By lobbing his shot in, it gave the defenders no real chance to stop the goal being scored. 3 – 1.
At half time, Josh C came onto make his debut for the A team in place of Harvey. He combined well with Samuel down the left but within two minutes of the re-start, Gorse Hill pulled another goal back when Max was left one v one with an attacking player. As Max came out quickly to the side of the goal to try to get to the ball first, he slipped and as he dived, the attacker was able to take the ball round him and roll it into an unguarded net from the left hand side of the goal, with the covering defenders unable to get back in time despite some valiant efforts. 3 – 2.
Brook Field then began to get out of second gear again with Ollie producing a delightful turn and run. Josh C and Samuel continued to combine well down the Brook Field left but no real chances were created. At least Brook Field were starting to dominate possession and territory again. As it was close, the Year 6 players were brought back on just to steady the ship after 10 minutes of the second half. Josh F replaced Josh C and Jamie returned for Samuel. Almost immediately, Finn managed to score again to effectively seal the win. The ball came to him just outside the penalty area on the left hand side of the pitch. He kept looking to feed the ball into the area but had to keep running across the top of the penalty area towards the right. Every time he looked to shoot or pass, he was closed down and had to take another touch. As he reached the centre of the pitch, he eventually found enough time and space to get his shot away and what a shot! His long distance pile driver screamed into the net, just left of the centre, with the ‘keeper just beginning to move as the shot was past him! 4 – 2 and that seemed to finally deflate the Gorse Hill team’s attempts to draw level.
Jamie had the chance to make it 5 – 2 after being gifted a chance by a defender but his shot went straight to the goalie as he returned to the goal after being taken by surprise after his short goal kick had been given away by the defender.
Harvey came back on for Ollie after 12 minutes of the second half with Josh C returning for Jamie a minute later. Finn had a good run and cross before, with four minutes remaining, Josh F made way for Samuel. Josh C made the Gorse Hill ‘keeper produce a great save and Ollie replaced Finn for the last minute to see the game out!
A 4 – 2 win for Brook Field and they are safely through to round 3 of the Swindon PSFA Cup.
Thanks to Gorse Hill for coming over on a damp, dark and dank November evening and playing their part in such an entertaining and competitive Cup match that was played in an excellent sporting spirit.
Thanks to Mr Parsons for refereeing the game and all the parents for their support.
