Brook Field Off to a Flying Start - A Team

Brook Field began the 2016 – 2017 season with a free-scoring performance against Hazelwood Academy on Thursday 22nd September.  The A team was Max in goal, Sam (Capt) and Rhys in defence, Harvey, Finn and Josh in midfield and Ryan upfront. Peter, Oliver and Samuel were the substitutes. Many were making their debuts for the A team.

Brook Field kicked off at 3:50pm on a bright and sunny afternoon. Within three minutes, we were ahead. A corner was won on the Brook Field right; the ball came to Sam on the right hand side of the penalty area and his shot cannoned off the left hand upright to Harvey who was standing a couple of yards off the goal line and was able to pass the ball into the net with his right foot while the goalkeeper was still stranded in the middle of the goal.

1 – 0 became 2 – 0 when Rhys’ shot fell to Finn, whose left foot finish rippled the back of the net. Danger for Brook Field was just around the corner though when a defender inadvertently touched a long clearance from the Hazelwood goalie back to Max and an indirect free-kick had to be awarded. This came to nothing and the clean sheet was maintained.

Ryan was busy in the attacking third of the field and had had a couple of chances before finally making his mark. Finn passed the ball into Ryan and his shot went in off the ‘keeper to make it 3 – 0. While the ink was still drying on the notes being made, Josh scampered down the right wing leaving several players in his wake before crossing into Ryan who scored his second and Brook Field’s fourth of the afternoon with a fierce shot into the bottom corner. He then nearly bagged his hat-trick but the goalie made a great save for another Brook Field corner but it came to nothing.

After 14 minutes, Oliver and Samuel came on to make their debuts, replacing Ryan and Harvey. Samuel and Oliver combined straight away but Oliver’s shot crashed into the side netting. Oliver’s next contribution was to tee up goal number five. Oliver’s shot rebounded off the post and into the path of Finn who absolutely smashed the ball into the net.

17 minutes and Peter came on for Captain Sam to make his debut. An unfortunate own-goal when the ball trickled in off the ‘keeper’s grab for the ball made it 6 – 0. Oliver made it on to score sheet when three shots in quick succession pinged around the area bouncing back into play off the post, a defender and the goalkeeper before he pounced to finally put the ball over the line.

Half time came and Brook Field turned round to be playing facing into the Sun as it slowly sank behind the trees at the far end of the ground. No substitutions were made. Hazelwood kicked off the second half at 4:15pm. Finn rushed in to capitalise on some hesitation in the defence to make it 8 – 0.

Samuel got his account off the mark for the A team when Brook Field again benefited from another ricochet off a post. Josh’s fierce shot came off the left hand upright and fell to Samuel. He paused, cut inside pushing the ball onto his right foot before placing the ball inside the other upright, around the despairing dive of the ‘keeper. 9 – 0. Due to the rules of Swindon PSFA, this meant the match was officially over, but Hazelwood were in agreement to continue the match to give both teams chance to play and practice, so the next part of the report is for information only!

The tenth goal was the best team goal of the match with some excellent and sweeping passes between Josh and Samuel on the Brook Field right. Josh crossed the ball into Oliver who made it 10 – 0. Finn cut in on his left foot to make it 11 – 0. Samuel played the ball into Finn who scored to make it 12 – 0.

6 minutes into the second half and further substitutions were made with players continuing to play out of position. Sam came back on for Josh, Ryan replaced Rhys and Harvey returned to the action for Finn. Harvey hit a long shot over and Peter proved there are options this season in the Brook Field defence with some great defending to shepherd a Hazelwood player away threatening the Brook Field goal. Harvey hit a super pass to Samuel who beat his man and slid the goal past the advancing ‘keeper to score goal number 13. The match finished after Sam’s corner to Samuel who turned and shot with his left foot in one movement to complete the (unofficial) 14 – 0 scoreline.

So congratulations to all the team for a convincing first West Swindon League win of the season and our next league match is against Lydiard Millicent next Thursday 29th September.

Thanks to Hazelwood for hosting the match and playing in such a sporting manner. Brook Field nominated their goalkeeper in the first half and wearing shirt number “2” (Josh?) as Hazelwood’s “Man of the Match” and Hazelwood nominated Ryan and Samuel as Brook Field’s!

Thanks to Mr Parsons for refereeing and all the parents for their help with transport and support on the touchline!
